What it costs: Flat-rate for a straight swap. Price moves with the horsepower of the unit and whether the existing drain work needs redoing, which we tell you before we start rather than after.
Signs you need garbage disposal repair
- Disposal hums but won't turn (jam)
- Leaking from the bottom or the drain connection
- Won't power on at all
How we handle it
Unjam or diagnose
Many ‘dead’ disposals just need the reset and a manual free-up.
Repair or replace
Leaks from the housing mean replacement; drain leaks we re-seal.
Check the drain
We make sure the trap and branch drain are clear while we're under there.
What to know about garbage disposal repair in Arizona
Most disposal failures aren't the motor. They're a jam or a reset, and you can often fix them yourself before you call. If the disposal hums but won't turn, something's wedged in the grind chamber. Kill the power, free it with the hex wrench in the bottom socket, then hit the red reset button underneath. If it's totally dead, the reset button or the breaker tripped. We'd rather tell you that over the phone than charge you for a button push. When it's truly the motor, leaking from the bottom shell, or the chamber's rusted through, that's a replacement.
What you feed it decides how long it lasts, and Valley homes have a specific hazard: stringy, starchy waste plus hard water. Fibrous stuff (celery, artichoke, corn husks), grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, and especially starchy peels (potato) are the classic killers. They either wrap the impellers or congeal into a paste that, combined with our hard-water scale, builds up and clogs the trap and line downstream. Always run cold water during and after grinding so grease stays solid enough to flush. A disposal is for incidental scraps, not a stand-in for the trash.
Horsepower and build quality are a real choice, not marketing. A 1/3 HP builder-grade unit is underpowered and jams constantly. For most households a 3/4 HP or 1 HP unit with stainless components grinds harder waste without stalling and lasts a good deal longer. If noise bothers you, better units have sound insulation. We also pay attention to the discharge plumbing. A disposal married to an old, scaled, or poorly sloped drain arm will keep backing up no matter how good the unit is, so sometimes the honest fix includes the drain, not just the appliance.
One detail people miss: if you have a dishwasher, its drain hose ties into the disposal, and a new disposal ships with that inlet plugged. That plug has to be knocked out, or the dishwasher won't drain and you'll think the new disposal is defective. We also make sure there's a proper high loop or air gap so dirty disposal water can't back-siphon into the dishwasher. That's both a code and a sanitation issue. These are the small things that separate a clean install from a callback.
