Shower Not Getting Hot Enough?

A shower that only gets lukewarm is most often a worn anti-scald (pressure-balance) cartridge in the shower valve, or a rotation limit stop set too low. If every hot tap in the house is weak, the problem is the water heater instead. A single lukewarm shower while other faucets run hot points straight to the shower valve.

What to do right now

  • Run hot water at a nearby sink; if it's hot there, the shower valve cartridge or limit stop is the suspect
  • Check the anti-scald limit stop behind the handle and nudge it slightly toward hot per the valve maker's guide
  • If no faucet gets hot, check the water heater thermostat (set to ~120F) and listen for sediment rumble

Likely causes

  • Worn or mineral-clogged pressure-balance or thermostatic cartridge, accelerated by 16-20 grain hard water
  • Anti-scald rotational limit stop set too conservatively, capping how far you can turn toward hot
  • Crossed hot/cold connection or a failing mixing valve blending cold into the hot side
  • Water heater issue (undersized, sediment-filled, or thermostat too low) if all hot taps are affected

When to call a pro

If the quick fixes do not solve it, this is usually a faucet & fixture installation job. Liberty dispatches 24/7 with upfront pricing.

Shower Not Getting Hot Enough?, FAQ

Why is only my shower lukewarm but sinks are hot?
Showers use a pressure-balancing cartridge and an anti-scald limit stop that sinks don't. When that cartridge wears out from hard water, it can't mix in enough hot anymore, even though plenty of hot water is reaching the valve.
Can hard water cause a lukewarm shower?
Yes. Phoenix-area hard water leaves scale inside the cartridge, choking down the hot passage over time. Cartridges in hard-water homes wear out faster and are a common cause of declining shower heat.
